WORCESTER, Mass., October 3, 2006 — Fallon Clinic Foundation, the charitable
arm of Fallon Clinic, and the Goddard Elementary School of Science and Technology,
have teamed up to provide low-income Worcester Public School students with a new
computer learning lab, a fitness program, and classroom volunteers through Junior
Achievement.
Fallon Clinic and Fallon Clinic Foundation donations to the Goddard Elementary School
include 11 refurbished PCs for the lab, which helps students link to online NASA
learning programs, a $5,000 grant for the school’s “Fitness For All
Seasons” nutrition and exercise program, and up to 28 Fallon Clinic employee
volunteers for the school’s classrooms.
“Fallon Clinic Foundation’s concentration of support at the Goddard
Elementary School strongly impacts our ability to lift and measure the performance
of our students,” said Dr. James Caradonio, Worcester Public School Superintendent.
“The PCs alone have multiple uses, from linking to NASA educational programs,
to increasing the number of workstations available for MAP testing.”
MAP, or, Measures of Academic Progress, is an interactive, computer-based testing
tool used three times a year to measure a child’s actual level of achievement
in math, reading, and other subjects. Test results are immediate, allowing teachers
to pinpoint subjects in which students excel, or need extra help.
“Math and science skills are crucial to success in the 21st Century workplace,”
said Dr. Stephen Pezzella, Acting President of Fallon Clinic and Fallon Clinic Foundation.
“We are proud to support the efforts of the Worcester Public School system
in boosting these skills for students at the Goddard Elementary School of Science
and Technology.”
